Their relationship had been poisoned for a decade. Ten years of cold dinners, forced smiles, sharp comments, and a constant tug-of-war over the same man. So when her mother-in-law suddenly invited her on a week-long cruise — just the two of them — it didn’t feel like a gift. It felt like a setup.
Her husband insisted it was a peace offering. “She wants to fix things,” he said. “Please give her a chance.” Against her instincts, she agreed.
The first day aboard was unsettling. Her mother-in-law was unusually cheerful, overly helpful, strangely complimentary. It didn’t feel real — it felt rehearsed.
On the second day, she stepped aside to take a phone call. When she hung up and turned around, a young waitress was hovering nervously nearby, glancing between her and the older woman across the deck.
Then the waitress leaned in close and whispered something that sent a cold shock through her entire body.
“Just a warning… that woman you came with? She was asking the staff strange questions about you. Very strange. You might want to be careful.”
Her heart dropped.
She glanced over and saw her mother-in-law watching her — not smiling, not waving, just watching her with an expression she couldn’t read.
