Death Toll Surges Past 800 After Devastating 6.0 Earthquake — Region Shattered

A massive tragedy is unfolding after a powerful 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan, violently shaking entire communities across Nangarhar and Kunar provinces. What began as a terrifying jolt has now become one of the deadliest disasters the region has faced in years, with officials confirming that the death toll has surpassed 800, and hundreds more remain missing.

The quake hit with brutal force, leveling homes, crushing vehicles, and reducing entire villages to ruins within seconds. Survivors describe the ground “exploding beneath their feet,” with buildings collapsing before people even had time to escape.

Rescue teams say the destruction is so widespread that some remote villages are still unreachable. Roads split open, mountainsides crumbled, and landslides buried parts of the countryside, making every attempt to reach survivors a race against time.

Hospitals across the region are overwhelmed. Doctors are treating the injured in hallways, courtyards, and even outside on blankets as aftershocks continue to rattle the already-broken area. Thousands of families have been displaced, forced to sleep in open fields with no shelter, food, or clean water.

International aid groups and local volunteers are working side by side, pulling survivors from the rubble with bare hands and carrying the wounded on makeshift stretchers. Every living person found brings hope — but with every passing hour, the urgency grows heavier.

Officials warn that the number of victims is expected to rise as search crews reach more isolated communities. Many families still wait for news of loved ones, standing among ruins, clinging to hope while fearing the worst.

A catastrophe of this scale leaves scars that last a lifetime.
Eastern Afghanistan is mourning — and fighting to survive.

The world is watching, praying, and waiting as the search continues.
