When the phone rang, he answered casually, not knowing he was about to become the star of the strangest conversation his friends had ever overheard.
“Hello?”
“Honey, it’s me. Are you at the club?”
“Yes,” he replied, glancing around as his buddies leaned in with curiosity.
“Great! I’m at the mall two blocks away. I just saw a gorgeous mink coat. It’s absolutely stunning. Can I buy it?”
He hesitated. “What’s the price?”
“Only $1,500,” she said sweetly.
He shrugged. “Well… OK. If you like it that much, get it.”
His friends looked at him wide-eyed — but the call wasn’t over.
“Oh! And I also stopped by the Lexus dealership,” she continued. “Remember the car I wanted? They dropped the price. It’s only $72,000 now. Can I take it?”
He cleared his throat. “If it’s a good price… sure. Go ahead.”
His friends nearly fell out of their chairs.
“And one more thing,” she added. “The house we loved — the one for $950,000? The seller agreed to $900,000. Should we put the deposit down today?”
He gulped, surrounded by shocked faces.
“If you really love it,” he said bravely, “go ahead.”
“Thank you, honey! You’re the best! Bye!”
He hung up.
The room went silent.
Then he looked around at the stunned men and said:
“Does anyone know whose phone this is?”
