When a small insect crawled across the bathroom floor, it didn’t seem like much. But minutes later, 7-year-old Ethan screamed in pain after being bitten on the finger — and his mother knew something wasn’t right.
The photo she took of the culprit has since spread quickly online, alarming other families who have seen similar bugs in their homes. The insect in question, with its dark body, long antennae, and frightening-looking pincers at the back, is an earwig — a common household pest known for its intimidating appearance.
Despite their menacing look, experts explain that earwigs rarely pose a serious threat to humans. They don’t carry venom and can’t spread disease, though their pinchers can cause a sharp nip that may leave minor swelling or redness, especially in children with sensitive skin.
Ethan’s parents acted quickly, washing the bite with soap and warm water before applying a cold compress. Thankfully, the swelling went down within a few hours. However, local pest control companies have warned that a sudden increase in earwig sightings might indicate damp areas or small entry cracks where they can thrive.
If you notice similar bugs in your home, keep areas dry, seal gaps around doors and windows, and avoid leaving food or wet towels on the floor — these pests are attracted to moisture and dark hiding spots.
Ethan is now recovering, but his mother says the scare was enough to make her check every corner of the house. “I never thought something so small could look that frightening,” she said. “Now I just want to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
