She Refused to Have an Abortion at 17

When Pattie Mallette found out she was pregnant at just 17 years old, her world turned upside down. She was young, single, and struggling to find her place in life. Many around her, including those she trusted, pressured her to consider abortion. They told her she was too young, too poor, too lost to raise a child.

But Pattie made a decision that would change not only her life—but the entire music industry.

She chose life.

In 1994, she gave birth to a baby boy in London, Ontario. She named him Justin.

Pattie raised Justin Bieber as a single mother, often relying on community support and her own determination. Despite their financial hardships and personal struggles, she did everything she could to give him a chance at something better. She encouraged his love of music, often posting videos of him singing and playing instruments on YouTube.

Those simple uploads would go on to ignite a global phenomenon.

Justin Bieber was discovered by talent manager Scooter Braun, who was amazed by his talent and charisma even at a young age. From there, everything snowballed—record deals, sold-out tours, global fame. Justin quickly became one of the biggest pop stars in the world, all before he was even old enough to drive.

Today, Justin Bieber is a household name. He has won Grammy Awards, broken streaming records, and built an empire—all while being open about the ups and downs of fame, mental health, and finding purpose.

Through it all, Pattie Mallette remained one of his strongest supporters. Her decision at 17 to keep her baby despite overwhelming pressure is a quiet but powerful part of Justin’s origin story. In interviews and in her memoir Nowhere But Up, Pattie has spoken openly about her struggles with addiction, trauma, and redemption—but also about the deep love she has for her son.

Now, over three decades later, millions know Justin’s name—but fewer know the courageous choice his mother made before the world ever heard his voice.

And that choice changed music history.
