I Married a Stranger So He Wouldn’t Die Alone

I was twenty-nine and still learning how to live with the loss of my mother when volunteering at a hospital became the only thing that gave my grief some purpose. That was where I met Thomas, a 72-year-old man dying from heart failure with nobody regularly visiting him. Within days, our conversations became the brightest part of his afternoons. Then he made an extraordinary request: he wanted me to marry him so that, when his final moment arrived, he could leave the world as someone’s husband rather than feeling completely alone.

I thought he was joking until he reached for my hand and asked again. Two days later, a hospital chaplain performed a tiny ceremony beside his bed. I wore my yellow sweater, and because we had no wedding rings, Thomas slipped the pull tab from a soda can onto my finger. Our marriage lasted exactly seven days. I remained beside him through every difficult breath, and when his heart finally stopped, I was holding his hand.

Hours later, Thomas’s elderly attorney entered the empty room carrying a battered green backpack. “Thomas wasn’t who you thought he was,” he told me. “He wanted you to know the truth.” Inside the backpack were photographs, old documents, several handwritten letters and a small metal box. The papers revealed that Thomas had quietly accumulated a considerable fortune after selling the manufacturing company he had founded decades earlier. But there was something even more surprising: he had deliberately spent his final years living modestly after becoming estranged from the relatives who seemed interested only in his money.

The final letter was addressed to me. Thomas explained that he hadn’t asked me to marry him to transfer his fortune secretly or trick me into becoming responsible for his affairs. His estate had already been arranged long before we met. Instead, the backpack contained something personal: the deed and keys to a small lakeside cottage that had belonged to his late wife, along with enough money placed in a trust to maintain it. He wrote that during our conversations I had repeatedly described dreaming of opening a quiet place where grieving families could spend time together, and he wanted the cottage to make that dream possible. His remaining fortune was being divided among charities and several people who had cared for him throughout his life.

Months later, I stood outside that cottage holding the same green backpack and the soda-can tab Thomas had used as my wedding ring. I eventually transformed the property into a small nonprofit retreat where families could stay while coping with serious illness and loss. Thomas’s secret wasn’t simply that he had been wealthy—it was that he had spent his final days deciding what his money could mean after he was gone. Our marriage lasted only one week, but the gift he left behind allowed the kindness that brought us together to continue for years.
