She didn’t waste time explaining. The document wasn’t emotional—it was calculated. Legal language, signatures required, conditions clearly written. She wanted them to sign away something tied to their identities, something connected to their birth that had suddenly become valuable. It wasn’t about reconnecting. It wasn’t about love. Ethan stepped forward first, his voice steady despite everything. Sophie stood beside him, her hand gripping his sleeve tightly. They didn’t look confused—they looked certain. They had grown up knowing who stood by them, who raised them, who stayed. Alicia watched them carefully, expecting hesitation, maybe even curiosity. “I think you came here expecting something different,” Sophie said quietly, her voice stronger than I had ever heard it. Ethan nodded, taking the envelope from Alicia’s hand, glancing at it briefly before placing it back on the table untouched. There was no anger, no shouting—just clarity. The kind that doesn’t need explanation. Because sometimes, the truth isn’t complicated. It’s simply lived, day after day, until it becomes unshakable.

Alicia stood there for a moment longer, as if waiting for something to change. But nothing did. The photos on the wall, the memories in that house, the years she had missed—they weren’t things she could step back into. Slowly, she picked up the envelope again, her expression unreadable, and walked toward the door.
