Can You Really Cut the Tags Off New Pillows?

Many people have noticed the large warning label sewn onto new pillows and mattresses that says, “Under penalty of law this tag not to be removed except by the consumer.” At first glance, it sounds as though cutting the tag off could get you into legal trouble. In reality, the warning is often misunderstood.

The key words are “except by the consumer.” That means once you purchase the pillow, you are the consumer, and you’re completely free to remove the tag if you want. The warning isn’t directed at the person who owns the pillow—it applies to manufacturers, retailers, and anyone selling the product before it reaches the customer.

These labels were originally introduced to protect buyers from dishonest manufacturers who, many years ago, sometimes stuffed pillows and mattresses with unsanitary or mislabeled materials. The tag lists information about the filling and confirms that the product meets labeling requirements, helping consumers know exactly what they’re buying.

After you’ve purchased the pillow, keeping the tag is entirely optional. Some people leave it attached because it contains useful care instructions, warranty details, or product identification, while others remove it immediately because they find it uncomfortable during sleep. Either choice is perfectly acceptable.

So if you’ve been avoiding cutting off that annoying pillow tag because you thought it was against the law, you can relax. The warning isn’t meant for you—it’s there to regulate the sale of the product before it reaches the consumer. Once it’s yours, removing the tag is completely your decision.
