The Strange Tower at the End of the Driveway Finally Explained

While driving through rural Oregon, many people notice tall wooden structures standing near the ends of driveways and wonder what they could possibly be. At first glance, they resemble tiny towers, oversized birdhouses, or even miniature lookout posts. With their narrow shape and small glass-fronted compartment at the bottom, they certainly don’t look like anything most people see every day.

The mystery becomes even more intriguing because these structures are often found in front of homes rather than businesses. Since they appear empty and are built well above the ground, it’s easy to imagine they serve some unusual purpose. Visitors frequently stop to take photos or ask homeowners what they’re for.

The answer is much simpler than most people expect. These towers are decorative mailbox enclosures. The actual mailbox is typically installed inside the lower compartment with the glass or clear front facing the road, allowing mail carriers to easily access it. The tall upper section is purely decorative and gives the mailbox a distinctive appearance that stands out from traditional roadside mailboxes.

Many homeowners build them to match the style of their house or to create a unique entrance to their property. Some include house numbers, lighting, storage compartments, or decorative trim, while others keep the design simple. Although they look oversized, the extra height is mainly for appearance rather than function.

So, the next time you spot one of these unusual towers along an Oregon road, you can put the mystery to rest. They’re not birdhouses, wildlife feeders, or observation towers—they’re creative mailbox structures designed to add character and curb appeal to a home’s entrance.
